Raymond Mears had worked at the top end of the tailoring industry all of his life. He started his career as a measure cutter and worked his way up through the ranks to designer and finally a director of a large Walsall based company. At the age of 59 he decided to start his own company manufacturing equestrian jackets which he supplied to a local Jodhpur company. Due to his background quality and style were of prime importance, it was therefore not long before the Mears name became known and the company had to move to larger premises; it was at this time he was joined by his son John who stills runs the factory today. John like his father had always been in the clothing trade and prior to his move to the family business was a director of a clothing manufacture in the North of England.

By tradition tailors, the Mears Family initially brought to the equestrian sector the knowledge and craftsmanship gained from half a century of manufacturing quality clothing. This is one reason they are still manufacturing in this country today, to use their skills, knowledge and understanding of jacket manufacture to the full and be in total control of the quality of garment they make. They are proud of what they produce, as is the skilled and dedicated workforce, the majority of who have been with the company for many years.
Customer satisfaction is a prime objective of the company so quality control is of the utmost importance, which starts at the onset by their choice of fabric. All fabric is produced in this country and sourced from top quality mills in both Scotland and Yorkshire. The garments are individually hand cut, and as a high proportion of the jackets are tweeds the matching of checks is vital. Once on the machine line each machinist is responsible for a specialist operation which she performs. From the machine room the jackets are passed to the press room where they are hand pressed and the buttons sewn on again by hand for the majority of styles. Each jacket is then individually inspected prior to dispatch. All departments work together as a team to produce top quality coats and jackets designed not only to fulfil the correct code of dress, but also to accommodate the demands of riders, perfect fit and freedom to move.
Due to manufacturing in this country Mears can also offer choice and individualism. Quotes John Mears, “There is not a structured style of jacket we cannot produce and we cater for all disciplines from the novice rider to dressage and side saddle habits. As a company we are proud to supply the British Eventing Team with their formal jackets and tail coats.”

Mears comprehensive range of Pytchley Hunt wear covers all the style requirements for the most discerning of hunts person. They also offer a customised collar and engraved button service.
There is a wide selection of styles to choose from for each discipline, plus the choice of either an easy or close fit jacket for ladies and girls. The close fit jacket is available in one inch graduations to achieve that perfect fit. Once you have decided on the style of coat or jacket you then have a comprehensive choice of fabrics and trims to choose from, the decision is yours. By carefully watching fashion trends and listening to customers, the Mears Collection is constantly updated to suit the needs of the equestrian world. By manufacturing in this country they can offer flexibility, choice and individualism with a quality guarantee which they monitor themselves.
