Maggie Hall, Asst. Sec. Grafton Hunt

For some years now I have taken children for their hunting exam on the field.  After ensuring that they can safely jump a fence open and close a gate and understand what is going on, I give one of them a handful of sweets and ask that child to share them among the other children.

When asked if this was a reward I assure them it is not - but the first lesson in how to pass a hip flask around!  I am pleased to report that the exercise is a complete success.

Four years ago my shy and nervous 10yro son took his pony to his first autumn hunt meet. I had paid for an introductory membership that covered three meets. After returning home from his first day I realized this would not be sufficient, and I immediately upgraded it to a full subscription. He is now about to complete his 3rd season with the Meynell and South Staffs hunt.

As March approaches he can only wish away the summer so he can start his next hunting season. Through hunting his confidence and horsemanship skills have improved dramatically but the friendships made and support given to these youngsters has been fantastic. Thank you to all those out hunting who spend their time in enthusing the next generation.
